Slim Rich and Famous

Following a journey through the harsh realities of war as a combat photographer, Aarons then decided to explore the elite world of glamour, fame and wealth. It wasn't long before he was swept into a whirlwind of luxury and extravagance and became an integral part of his subjects' lives.
'Slim, Rich and Famous' is exhibiting at the Getty Images Gallery for the next month.

David Ryle

David Ryle

Much of Ryle's work reminds me of Nick Meek's from composition of shot and choice of location, to the similar 'bleached out' effect.

Nick Meek

However, Ryle explores other dimensions in both mood and content and I think his work has a more atmospheric feel to it, which differentiates his work from Meek's. In particular, much of his 'places' work posseses a serene and calm quality, which is all created through setting, use of tones, the stillness and lack of presence within the pictures.

Ryle is also developing his portraiture work.

Alison Carmichael

Clean Me, is the first in a self promotional series by Alison Carmichael. “We projected my artwork on to the back of the van so I could trace it in the dirt with my finger,” she explains.

The queen of hand lettering shows the beauty of words when they are hand lettered as illustrated in her previous works, most particularly the infamous 'Cunt' poster.

Seven Photographs that Changed Fashion

Rankin remakes a selection of influential fashion images taken by the world's most iconic fashion photographers of the Twentieth Century. He explores and recreates seven provocative images which have had an impact on the world of fashion photography.

Herb Ritts - The face of Dolce & Gabanna, David Gandy, poses for Rankin's remake of 'Fred with Tires'.

Cecil Beaton - Hat Box

Erwin Blumenfeld - Heidi Klum works it for Rankin's raunchy interpretation on this abstract Vogue cover.

Richard Avedon - Erin O'Connor poses as Dovima with Elephants

David Bailey - Rankin's girlfriend, Tuuli, takes the place of Jane Shrimpton in this classically beautiful shot.

Helmut Newton - Shot in the Rue Abriot Jade Parfitt makes a perfect angular and androgynous model for this Helmut Newton remake.

Guy Bourdin - Rankin adds a touch of Matrixesque to this already provocative and sexual image.

Best In Book

Here is some work of the candidates for Best in Book.

Armando Ferrarii

These photographs are from a series of everyday, urban spaces in Los Angeles. The mood, emptiness and stillness of these shots create an almost theatrical atmosphere with a sense of anticipation.

Ernst Fischer - Datong Train

These images are a visual representation of Gustave Flaubert's book 'November'. Fischer draws on the emotions of desire and longing that is evident in Flaubert's work. The images are composed and shot in a way that evokes a presence and connection between the subject and observer.

Steve Hanson - The Eleventh Hour

Hanson takes a trip down memory lane back to his first visit to Bradford Lido in 1968. Drawing on the peace and tranquility Hanson experienced provoked him to photograph few of the lidos that still remain. The images capture a calm and mystical moment, which is heightened by the way both the light accentuates the architecture and the dramatic tones of the skies and waters.

Richard Ansett

Richard Ansett was commisioned by a Discovery Networks Europe publication to photograph young people who were in foster care or had been adopted. This kind of portraiture is unpredictable as you don't know how the subject is going to present themselves or respond in such a situation. The intrusion of the camera adds to the intimacy as it can reveal what is beneath the exterior and what is not necessarily evident at a glance.
